March 2012 Mission Trip to Ministry of Hope, Malawi
Hi.  Check back often for updates on the trip, and send any questions or comments to me, Tom Hallam, at tom@hallam.org
February 12.  Six boxes of donated medical supplies arrived at our house.  Total value is over $50,000 and sufficient for about 2,000 patient treatments for the medical problems that the team expects to see in Malawi.  Fran, Margie, and Pete repacked the supplies into three shipping containers, which Fran and Margie will take as their "checked baggage".  Ken and Pete also brought massive amounts of medical supplies, but only the ladies also brought baby clothes!

Pete arrived a week before the rest of the team, and one of his new projects ( in addition to feeding kids and providing medical care) is to leave each village with the equipment and skills to grow much of their own food.
Pete is warmly welcomed
March 22. Fran and Margie (friend and neighbor) left Savannah in the afternoon, and met up with Ken (physician from Arizona) at the Atlanta airport.  After a 16 hour overseas flight, they will land in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Then they will fly to Malawi to meet our friend Pete, who went a week earlier.

March 23. Arrived this evening in Johannesburg for a quick overnight and a morning flight to Malawi.

March 24.
They arrived this afternoon at Nelly's Rooming House in Lilongwe, Malawi, their home for two weeks.  The power was out (a frequent event) but the cell phone worked, and we had a chance to chat.

March 25.
The team worked today unpacking the medical supplies, repacking bulk medicines into one-patient quantities, and generally getting ready for three mobile medical clinics.  Today is Sunday, and church is a major event.  There are no pictures this time, but Pete did record one song on his iPad.  Click the "play" button in the box below if it does not start by itself!  It is in English, and the theme is "Oh Lord, how wonderful/marvelous is your name."  After church, everyone ran to the nursery to hug the babies.

March 26.  The first Mobile Medical Clinic.  This is the only health care that the villages receive, and 400 people came.  The last picture below is the microscope.  Many people come with symptoms of malaria, but they can only be given the potent drugs if they are confirmed to have malaria.  In the last picture below, Pete is watching his successful repair of the lab microscope.  Malaria can be confirmed under the microscope, but for months the microscope had a defective lens and no power for its lamp.. Pete brought a new lens and rewired the lamp to work off the battery from their truck.  It worked!
